Early Game Dev Strategies: Part 11 – Nurturing Passion and Perseverance

Game development is no ordinary journey; it’s an exhilarating, often challenging, painful adventure. But within all that code, design concepts, and late-night screaming at your computer debugging session, sits the energy that keeps driving us – passion and perseverance.

🌑 Passion – It’s the urge inside us that gets us out of bed and straight to the game editor in the morning. It’s the belief in your game’s potential. Your passion is what keeps you going when the going gets tough, and let’s admit it, it can get TOUGH. It’s the source of your most innovative ideas, the energy that drives you to try new ideas and designs in your development.

🌓 Perseverance – The path of game development is rarely without obstacles to overcome. Bugs, challenges, and revisions can be almost Boss level opponents. But it’s your perseverance, your determination to overcome these obstacles, that will take a good idea and make it into a great game.

🌕 Stay Committed – Stay committed to your vision. Game development is not a quick and easy path. Through the highs and lows, let your passion support you through your projects development. Take breaks if you are losing focus. Don’t just “go for a walk” (which helps with brain fog and creative blocks) but find other projects and hobbies to focus on when your development is becoming a bit too much. This will give you a hard reset and refocus on your project, giving you higher energy levels for development when you are ready to get back in the saddle.

🌗 Adapt and Thrive – As we have seen over the few months, the gaming landscape is ever-changing. Not just how games monetize or deliver constant new ways to engage with their audience, but even the size of studio has changed and reverted back to small teams making great experiences. Adaptation is the key to survival. Be open to feedback, embrace new technologies (always be learning!), and evolve your game as needed. Flexibility is key to being an excellent developer.

🌑 Celebrate Every Step – Lets be honest, game development is a long and dirty road. Don’t forget to celebrate every milestone, whether big or small. Keep track of your development progress. Make blog posts or videos explaining your design process and ideas then share them with your community. This will remind you how far you have come with your game and make it easier to continue. Now go out and make that dream game!
